S4000 Overview by Chet Davis MSUS from the US Casablanca Event

S-4000/PRO NEW BENEFITS
The editing in full resolution with the re-engineered HD capability is great -- a beautiful, efficient, speedy thing, and the quality is amazingly clear and beautiful! We imported some 4 minutes of 1080 HDV footage and after about 18-seconds Jörg was editing the footage on the 42" Plasma screen in full high-def right in front of me -- awesome! He was trimming, splitting, adding effects right to the HD signal, no more down-conversion prior to editing and no need to create special effects on both SD and HD streams.

The move from VXWorks as our backbone to Linux was a great move on Jörg's part -- it not only opened up the increased compatibility you will read about below but because we can take advantage of open source programming available to all Linux developers, our upgrade/development time has been dramatically reduced!

Again, the new HD editing capability of the S-4000/S-4000 PRO is wonderful but I personally believe the new capability with the Video, Audio and Photo Archives with multiple file support, and the capability to export files into some 700 hand-held media devices (by model and make) is incredible!

I truly believe this new unit will be a huge success, not only with those customers already invested in the Casablanca product line but with other new or returning customers looking for a solution that so fully and easily addresses the multitude of import formats and the desire to be able to export to so many different formats and devices so simply.

Once you launch the S-4000, the system boots up onto the new S-4000 'Main Menu' . Here you not only find an icon that will take you to the Smart Edit (video editing) interface but you also see Video Archives, Audio Archives and Photo Archives (and more).

It is these three archives that MS DE has provided us with awesome tools! You can import into the Video Archives video footage from many contemporary formats (yes, 1080, 720, and even AVCHD).

You can import via a connected USB drive (Jörg was importing programs from a 4GB Verbatim portable drive) -- it can be external USB HDD, CD, DVD or even over the network via the ethernet ports. Yes -- there is even a connection setting to import files from a connected PC or a network whether it is wired or wireless! (as long as that PC has file sharing engaged).

While in the Video Archives, you can play on the S-4000 HD or directly from that other device in its native format on your connected high resolution monitor. You don't even have to convert the signal yet into Smart Edit to play it back, you can do so right in the archives!.

Once you have imported a video file into the Archives you can pull it up into the Bogart SE (smart Edit) and mix and match file formats in the same project! In today's world of multiple media I believe this is a phenomenal tool... You can work with virtually any contemporary media your customers/colleagues provide you.

Same for Audio Archives (virtually any contemporary audio file format is compatible) and Photo Archives where you can import and pull into your Bogart SE projects still images whether they are JPEG, GIF, TIF, etc.

Once your project is complete - you can, of course, export as we do now - to SD tape, HDV tape, SD DVD or with the Blu-ray Drive option, you could burn a Blu-ray DVD.

And here is the real 'icing on the cake'. You could choose to export the file to most any contemporary file format -- including converting the file to play back smoothly into one of hundreds of portable media devices.... yes, there is a pull-down menu that allows you to benefit from the hours of MS DE development.

You simply select the format you wish to export to, whether a MOV, WMV, YouTube! file or to a specific device like the Motorola Razor (several specific models listed) or Apple iTouch. After your selection, the S-4000 will process the project for you into the format best utilized by that format/device. I am not kidding --- this is great! You would then export the file to your PC and sync up the device to load programming onto your device.

SOFTWARE
MS DE has been working to achieve high capability for existing Casablanca software titles on the new S-4000 products. There is a high percentage of software that already is fully tested and compatible, other titles that are mostly compatible and some that need additional testing. MS DE will soon announce this information.

The good news for us all is that they have commitments from all the currently active software developers to provide compatible versions of the available software. For most of these developers they already have a Linux compatible version available and it is a relatively simple matter of revising the software for application into Bogart SE. It is far easier for them to modify/create software for the new Linux version of Smart Edit than to redevelop software for the VXWorks backbone in our previous products.

Two products that will not be initially compatible are QuadCam and Motion Perfect. However, QuadCam has been the top priority for software compatibility and is already being addressed. QC used the C-Cube processor that we no longer have in the new units, but the good news is that with the more powerful new processor QuadCam will enjoy larger preview windows (in the mixing window) and with full resolution!

As you may know, the company that provided us with Motion Perfect is no longer in business. Jörg has met with a new company that has an awesome motion manipulation software which is likely the new source for our customers with slow/fast motion needs. This new product will even outshine the previous version with a flash adjustment mode to address the previously encountered side effects when enabled with a high contrast flash/light.

DELIVERY / STABILITY
Though the initial release of a brand new system with new software may involve working through some early adopter issues - the good news (the fact) is that this S-4000 is built on the hardware success of the Enterprise (the home entertainment product) which has been released in Germany 2+ years now --- coupled with the fact that for Bogart SE - some 98% of the source code has not been modified but rather translated over to Linux.

ULTRA CARD FOR RENOMMEE & SOLITAIRE
For those customers who own a Solitaire, Solitaire Plus, Renommee, Renommee Plus we are expecting an Ultra Card upgrade (includes Bogart SE software) - this will provide you with the option to modify your unit to include most of the benefits of the new S-4000 products - minus the same processing power.

This Ultra Card upgrade requires you to send your unit to the distributor for upgrade where your existing Casablanca will be disassembled and the new card and  the DVI connection installed.

LEGACY PRODUCTS
The other possible future option is that the Bogart SE software only may be made available for these same units, providing them with some of the new features but not with the ability to access their analogue ports and without the ability to monitor High resolution signals.

This Bogart SE software upgrade will likely be made available first to the Liberty and Liberty Plus customers as they have no access to the Ultra Card upgrade.
